Like the generation that defined with Douglas Coupland novel Generation X is getting older. At a certain age - usually in the third decade of our lives - self-absorption gives way to concerns deeper. For Coupland seems that satire has been replaced by a desire for a deeper examination of human life. This is clearly evident in his seventh novel Hey Nostradamus! which avoids the standard formula of dry, cut and the mood of the hip for a deeply spiritual story. Hey Nostradamus! is four stories linked by a single tragic thread. It opens with a Columbine High School-style attack by three students at a school in Vancouver's fictional high in 1988, seen from the perspective of students Cheryl and Jason. The two secretly married in Las Vegas weeks before and that morning Cheryl reveals to Jason that she is pregnant. A few hours Cheryl later lies dead in the arms of Jason in the school lunchroom after the shooters have been killed by their comrades. It is a very powerful chapter narrated by Cheryl dead, who is often seen to reflect on their place in the afterlife and to address universal issues in the form of letters and prayers God. Jason is initially hailed a hero for killing one of the shooters, but soon after suspicion by some who have participated. Over time reappears as an adult shattered a decade later not to leave behind the events of that day. He begins a relationship with Heather, a court reporter, but disappeared soon afterwards in mysterious circumstances. He spends fruitless months searching for him, even resorting to hiring the services of a psychic who can be more than it seems. The story then shifts to Reg, Jason's father, a man whose religious beliefs inflexible and cruel Jason takes charge of murder on the day of the shooting and eventually separates him from everyone he loves. Hey Nostradamus! Coupland is interesting to make some decisions in her story. Note that does not explore the reasons why the three students were in their bloody campaign motion strange considering that the novel addresses the question of evil. Nor Coupland provide many answers to the questions raised by the novel. That is perhaps not surprising given that answer the question of what higher purpose our lives have is that we must respond individually. Coupland aversion to religion is obvious throughout Hey Nostradamus! A group of young Christians, as it comes through the Hitler Youth in his eagerness to maintain the purity of its members and Reg uses his religious fervor as a weapon against those deemed unworthy of salvation. Despite that, Hey Nostradamus! is a deeply spiritual novel that uses archetypes about Christians -- Jason from messianic role in helping to stop the killing of the school, in a sense to sacrifice for others, to Reg on the role of a tragic and repentant Judas ultimately - to tell stories about his character. Hey Nostradamus! in short, a work illegally in the form of an author used to using new tools to tell a history. It opens strongly with Cheryl narrating her death, but begins to stumble in the final of Jason's story, especially with a silly plot twist involving her sister in the law, falling apart with the history of ineffective and unlikely to Heather, before recovering with the prospect of Reg However, despite Hey Nostradamus! is still moving work is designed to provoke readers to ask questions about family, spiritual life and the ties that bind our lives together. Coupland and have not herd up in the mood, but eventually everyone grows.
